Kanye West & Jay-Z: Watch The Throne
The Most anticipated album of the year is finally here! Here's the track by track review.
1. No Church In the Wild (feat. Frank Ocean) - DOPE instrumental on this one. Frank Ocean's chorus is a little lackluster but it's nothing to worry about. I wish they had removed the overautotuned part at the end (perhaps from The-Dream?) though. Jay-Z has the first verse, which makes sense because he has about 65% of the verses on the album.
2. Lift Off (feat. Beyonce) - This coulda been left of. It was supposed to be an "All of the Lights" part 2 kinda track, but it just ends up awkward. Ye does his incoherent mumbling on both verses (he seems to do that a little much on this album)
3. Ni**as in Paris - Probably my favorite beat on the album. The lyrics are crazy as well. Must listen for anyone. The last minute of the song is CRAZY! That ending beat is beautiful.
4. Otis (feat. Otis Redding) - Classic Kanye beat. Wish they had rapped about something other than their riches, but I'm just nitpicking.
5. Gotta Have It - Some people have been hating on this beat. I actually fucked with it. This track is mostly Jigga.
6. New Day - Probably the best lyrics on the album are on this gem of a song. The two rappers speak on how they want their kids to turn out. Kanye REALLY goes in by talking about all his mistakes and how he hopes they don't reflect onto his children. Another MUST HAVE!
7. That's My Bitch - This leaked a while back. Features a really cool Q-Tip beat and dope La Roux chorus. Pretty self explanatory on what it's about haha.
8. Murder To Excellence - This track is proving to peoples favorites. I really dig this one as well. It talks about the progress of the people from the hood as they move from murder to great achievements. Swizz Beatz (who isn't my personal favorite) definitely holds it down.
9. Who Gon Stop Me - Real dubset type of song. This is gonna be huge at the clubs. I promise.
10. Welcome To the Jungle - This was another skipper to me. I just couldn't get passed Swizz's AWFUL chorus. Why do rappers even let this clown talk on tracks.
11. Made in America (feat. Frank Ocean) - Frank Ocean actually holds his own as the trio rap about mostly black heroes. This one's a real patriotic song.
12. Why I Love You (feat. Mr. Hudson) - This one goes. Hands down the best chorus on the album. This is almost completely dominated by Jay-Z except for the last 40 seconds of the song which are Ye's bars.
13. Illest Motherfucker Alive - Southside is next up. He's been mostly fuckin' with Bricksquad (just like Lex Luger), but this is his first break through. I could see this song being in the soundtrack of Batman 3 or somethin. Crazy shit.
14. H.A.M. - It was love or hate for this song. I personally loved it. Lex Luger's beat was ridiculous with the way it switched up into opera in the end. So fuckin' musical. And the way it sounded like a Kanye beat mixed with boomin' 808's made it even better. Ye's verse was eh, but Jay's flow on this song was awesome. Oh and it's my Favorite Song!!!
15. Primetime - Cool little No ID beat. The dynamic duo speaks on their favorite situations or primetimes.
16. The Joy (feat. Curtis Mayfield) - Gorgeous Pete Rock production. He's definitely one of the best beat craftsmen of all time. Unlike most of the songs, it's mostly Kanye rapping. Oh and you may remember this song when it was released during G.O.O.D. fridays of last fall.
Overall I think the album was one of the best of the year (maybe tied with Tyler, The Creator's album). Which isn't saying much, because most of the albums this year have been disappointing. The beats were all really nice. And I thought that Jay was at his best. My issue with the album was that it was mostly dominated by Jigga. I wish that Ye had gotten more bars in, because I like him a lot more. I don't think that this album is gonna go down as a classic. In fact, I see "My Beautiful Dark Fantasy" becoming more of a classic. But there is one thing I really like on this album: on a lot of the songs, the beats would completely switch up halfway through the song (for example, Ni**as in Paris). I think that the album lived up to the hype, but I don't think that it's gonna be remember forever. But it will definitely be played a lot in the next few years. Oh, and this album is GREAT for ridin' around in the whip with.
