Best Mixtapes of 2011

This should be last HUGE article but here’s my favorite mixtapes of this year (in no order). These won’t be as in-depth as the “best album” reviews. I’ll include links with the descriptions. Some of them might be Datpiff.com links, so just click download on the page and a pop-up should show up to finish the download. Ask me if you need any help downloading or opening links! Hope you like my hootass picture ahaha:

BeBe Boohgz: The Tale of Aire Dixon - FreEP

I originally found him on YouTube because of his remakes of various popular songs such as Over. When I found out that he did more than remixes (or “Jacks” as he calls them), I was quite interested. This was the first taste of his solo music… and it goes. “Party People” samples Kanye’s song “Good Friday” (from the G.O.O.D. Friday music series). Olivia Cipolla shows her strong vocals on the EP. Overall BeBe Boohgz really deserves a shot at fame because of his excellent work ethic.

Favorite Song: Fee Fi Fo Fum

BeBe Boohgz: The Songs that Didn’t Make the Album

A lot of these songs were released in his weekly series. Bebe’s angry side really comes up, but it works (Eminem should take notes). “In My Own Mind”, “Black Oute” and “Guillotine” are some of the highlights.

Favorite Song: Hit ‘Em High

Big K.R.I.T.: Return of 4Eva

Arguably the project of the year, the Mississippi native’s mixtape sounds like vintage Outkast. His music is really no other artist’s music. Extremely. Fuckin. Dope.

Favorite Song: Moon & Stars (Remix)

Blu: Jesus

In typical Blu fashion, the underground MC released his latest project out of nowhere. It’s pretty damn good, but the quality sounds like it was recorded by a toaster (as usual with Blu). Nice addition to those big Blu fans out there

Favorite Song: Jesus

Cory Gunz: Son of a Gun

Before this, I wasn’t really a big Gunz fan. The album is mostly produced by Cardiak and Dot n Pro. Every song fuckin’ slaps. Gunz has got the dopest flow in the game without a doubt. This is a MUST DOWNLOAD.

Favorite Song: Bed Time

Curren$y: Covert Coup

Spitta and The Alchemist (one of the best producers of all time). Do I need to say more?

Favorite Song: Double 07

Elzhi: Ellmatic

Probably one of the most difficult tasks of 2011 was Elzhi’s decision to remake the best album of all time (Illmatic). He does a hell of a job to it. The dude is seriously one of the most underrated dudes in hip-hop. The Slum Village member shines over remade instrumentals courtesy of Will Sessions.

Favorite Song: Life’s a Bitch

The Game: Purp & Patron

After a lot of disappointing leaks (*cough cough Pussy Fight), there was some serious doubt as to whether The Game still has it. Well, this 30-song mixtape certainly changed people’s minds. With features from Fabolous, Lil Wayne, Wiz Khalifa, Snoop Dogg & Dr. Dre, Purp & Patron shows a strong lineup of features. “The Ocean” has a smooth Dr. Dre production. The Game boasts his riches on “Wonderful World.” Purp & Patron is perfect introduction to The Game’s music.

Favorite Song: Soo Woo

Gilbere Forte & Sean Rose: Smmertime, Sunshne & Nghtfall – FreEP

I found this guy from his “87 Dreams” album from last year. The beats on this album make you feel like you’re underwater aha. You know, like the ones that Drake always goes over (the chorus to this song "Paris Morton Music" for example). Ya dig? Anyways, Gilbere shows impressive verses and a nice chorus on “Hangin’ Out the Window.” Also, newcomer Selina Carrera shows off a great voice on “Raw” and “All for You.” Gilbere is extremely underrated, and I promise that he’s about to blow up. Oh and Sean Rose is a pretty decent MC as well ahah.

Favorite Song: Raw

Juicy J: Rubba Band Business 2

Ignorance is the only way to describe this album. Ignorance and loud Lex Luger beats (as you can see, I’m a sucker for anything done by Luger). It’s awesome.

Favorite Song: Strapped With the Strap

Kurtis Blow Jr.: Californication

Dude’s the son of a legendary MC. So he’s got high expectations. I think he lived up to them. He’s like the LA version of Drake mixed with Big Sean. That’s a good thing.

Favorite Song: Supercalifragalisticflyshit

Lil Wayne: Blending Dwayne Carter

No this isn’t official. But DJ Simon Sez does an awesome job with blending various acapellas. If you’re a big Weezy fan, you’re gonna love this.

Favorite Song: Pledge Allegiance to the Lean

http://hulkshare.com/r8hswfgqgj1f

Lil Wayne: Sorry 4 the Wait

Mixtape Weezy. Nuff Said. Best mixtape of the year hands down.

Favorite Song: Gucci Gucci

Neako: LoudPACK Tree

Taylor gang affiliate, and producer turned rapper makes the third addition to his “Loud Pack” series. He has dope features from Vado, Wiz, and Juicy J. “Higher than Kanye” samples Kanye’s “Dark Fantasy”, and Neako really runs with it.

Favorite Song: Hello

http://hulkshare.com/s2djmnpn7v2j

Pries: Copy, Paste, No Glue

I hadn’t really like any of the Colorado native’s stuff before. But this one opened my eyes. He’s got like a weird B.o.B. flow, but a southern sound. “Songs about Nothing” is pretty hilarious as he raps three random verses over a thoughtless chorus. But it works! “Not With Me” shows a bunch of promises to a girl about how he’s gonna treat her right.

Favorite Song: Rain, Rain Go Away

http://hulkshare.com/b5sx6lj3wz5e

Pusha T: Fear of God

This was one of the most anticipated projects of 2011. And the Clipse member lived up to the hype. “Alone in Vegas” reminisces upon the former group (The Re-Up Gang) he belonged to. “Touch It” features a vintage Kanye West projection.

Favorite Song: Open Your Eyes

QuEST: The Reason: A Defense Mechanism

The Florida native returns after successful tapes such as “Broken Headphones.”
The beats on this tape are crazy. “We’re Goin Down” features a dope One Republic sample. QuEST’s dope articulation fits perfectly over the soulful, but futuristic instrumentals. This was in my top 3 favorite projects of the year so BE SURE to download this one.

Favorite Song: We’re Goin Down

Smoke DZA: The Hustler’s Catalog (THC)

JETS affiliate releases his mixtape with perhaps one of the best covers of the year (if you download it, you can see it!). Everyone in cahoots with Curren$y really seemed to step up this year, and Smoke was no exception. It’s shocking to hear, but “Know Better” is produced by Lex Luger (see, Lex CAN switch it up!). JETS over everything.

Favorite Song: Loaded

http://www.mediafire.com/?64bxu77lt25727r

Split Second: Barely Legal

Connecticut group Split Second might come off as a bunch of rich prep school kids trying to rap. Well they are. But here’s the thing, they’re good at it. “Gentlemen” is perhaps one of the best songs I’ve heard this year. “Friday” (no, not the Rebecca Black song) is also exceptional

Favorite Song: Gentlemen

http://hulkshare.com/yzuhve99rtth

Fabolous: The Soul Tape

This isn’t typical Fab. He’s considered by many as having the best punch lines in hip-hop. But these soulful beats don’t hold him back from doing his thing. “That’s Not Luv” features a Lil Wayne verse from like 2007 ahah, but Fabolous kills the STREET RUNNER beat. “Look at Her” is a remake to his hit “You Be Killen Em”, and Ryan Leslie’s (one of the best R&B artists/rappers in the game) kills it. Overall, it’s exactly what you would expect from Fab excluding the different set of beats.

Favorite Song: Riesling & Rolling Papers

http://www.mediafire.com/?8x50b9rej1s7nw1

Stalley: Lincoln Way Nights: Intelligent Trunk Music

Ohio native and recent MMG member Stalley releases his first mixtape. You may know him from one of Curren$y’s best songs, “Address.” His music reminds me of Big K.R.I.T.’s because there is nothing else like it. A lot of the instrumentals have real southern drum kits and commanding horns. And not mention, Stalley is an excellent MC. Why else would have Rick Ross signed him?

Favorite Song: See The Milq in My Chevy

http://www.mediafire.com/?k889pmew7jl4aa3

Tyga: Black Thoughts 2

Tyga takes a completely different approach after “Well Done.” Instead of being T-Raw and killing every beat, Tyga slows things down and gets a little more thoughtful. “Reminded” is extremely emotional with a dope Adele sample. He speaks on relationship problems on “Involved.” But if you’re listening for that somewhat hardcore Tyga sound, fear not because he’s got “Bad Bitches”, “Real or Fake”, and “Lap Dance”

Favorite Song: Real or Fake

http://www.mediafire.com/?6kzhxr2h9gqnzqi

Wale: More About Nothing

Ok so this mixtape was released last summer… but it never got the shine it deserved. After a so-so debut album, Wale lives up to his potential with the sequel to his “Seinfeld” inspired mixtape series. “The Breeze” marks the stoner anthem of the year. Hands Down. “The Manipulation 2” is hilarious: it’s about a guy who sucks up to a girl until he gets laid. Then after that, he becomes a huge douchebag. “The Posse Cut” is slapper for the ride. This mixtape is the most diverse project of the last two years (for example, “Eyes of the Tiger” is an anthem of pity toward Tiger Woods). It’s a real shame this tape was so slept on, because it was incredible. DMV (D.C., Maryland & Virginia) represent!

Willie the Kid: The Fly 2

This was the follow up to the first “The Fly” from the Detroit native. It’s better and it has some nice Lee Bannon Productions. “Fucking Toxic” has an ill Alchemist production, which is always a plus. Overall it’s a dope project.

Favorite Song: Fucking Toxic

http://www.mediafire.com/?4d3aj12dg59rko2

Wiz Khalifa: Cabin Fever

A lot of people hated this album. I actually thought that Lex Luger and Wiz went together perfectly. Don’t expect anything like Kush & OJ and try to keep an open mind.

Favorite Song: Hustlin’

http://www.mediafire.com/?m3to7cjscdnc2an

XV: Zero Heroes

I’ve been a fan of this dude for like 4 years now. The Wichita native returns with his one of his strongest mixtape to date. Seven is at his best with incredible instrumentals such as “When We’re Done.” Also J. Cole experiments his production talents on “Small Ville.” Best of all, Vizzy makes a dream collaboration with Kendrick Lamar!!!

Favorite Song: Textbook Stuff
